Director's Epistle

The market for steel construction is growing exponentially in India with consumers opting for new-age technologies as well as the need for rapid infrastructure development to match the economic growth of the country. Considering India’s extreme weather conditions, a steel building proves to be energy efficient, especially when insulated, because of its low thermal mass.

Thanks & Regards,

Rain Water Harvesting Using Interarch Pre-Engineered Buildings

Metal roofs are an ideal platform for rainwater collection. The smoother, cleaner, and more impervious the roof surface, the higher the water quality and amount of water that can be collected. The rainwater is collected in gutters on the roof level and transferred down to the ground using down take pipes installed, 1 at every bay grid.

Interarch recommends that end users of our buildings, design suitable underground rain water harvesting pits
to collect the rainwater coming through the down take pipes. This allows significant rainwater collection and harvesting, making your complex more eco-friendly.

New Possibility Education Institutes

Schools buildings have particular design requirements in terms ofspatial planning and flexible use of space, control of vibrations and acoustics, and robustness. In the higher educational sector, the form of construction is typically academic buildings consisting of offices, lecture theatres, classrooms and laboratories. Key requirements for educational buildings are fast solutions so that new buildings can be completed within one academic year, or even three months of the summer vacation in the case of building extensions, and also the flexible use of space to meet current and future educational needs.
Various Possibilities in Steel for Educational Sector
School or college buildings
Auditoriums & halls
Indoor & outdoor Stadiums
Administrative buildings
Lecture theatres
Classrooms and laboratories
Training Centre
Hostel block
Library building

Project Management Tip- Project Execution During Monsoons

Adverse weather conditions such as heavy rain, foggy conditions will impact thevisibility of the lifting crew. It is advisable to stop all lifting operations as soon as the weather condition started deteriorating. Interarch advises no erection work to be carried out during rain.
Other practices which can be followed during monsoon season
Raincoats are to be worn by all workers at site whenever rain is anticipated or during drizzling
Once the rain is over site in-charge should take a Work Permit from in house safety officer and client safety officer to resume work
Boom lifts are to be used during monsoon season
Material to be stacked above ground level in order to avoid water logging
Hot work like welding etc. to be prohibited during monsoon season
Use of Crawler cranes is advised during monsoon season
Materials like Insulation, Hardware, Paint, Galvanized Coils must be stored in a covered areas
Tarpaulin must be used to cover the structural material to avoid paint peel off
All painting work to be avoided during monsoon
Roofing work should be avoided, and post rain project team should wait for the surface to get dry before starting the roofing work
Throughout the monsoon season safety officer should be very vigilant and should thoroughly check all surfaces before allowing work to start after rain

Industry Spokesperson - Mr Anal Shah, NK Shah Consulting Engineers

Mr Anal Shah (Nk Shah Consulting Engineers) - MS (USA)

The Firm was established 1978 to provide engineering support in the field of civil engineering which is located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Firm has carried out various kinds of projects all over India and Nepal. The company has been involved in design of multistory buildings, industrial facilities such as sugar factories, distilleries, cold storages, dairies, oil mills, pharmaceutical labs etc., company townships and various special structures.

Company provides services of construction management, site supervision and material management. Firm has recently worked on the project for Grape Processing & Packaging in Sangli , Maharashtra.

While comparing PEB buildings in India and abroad we mainly see changes in detailing like the turns and connections and the joints are very well taken care of, the connections are smooth and uniform which is not seen in Indian PEB. Apart from the Industrial Steel Building in today’s time Multistory Steel building is the new concept in the market which is now picking fast in India in term of usage.

Scope Green Building is good in India. In fact there should be a mandateby the government to promote Green Buildings to save energy. Many Multinational companies are also coming up with such buildings to promote the Green Concept so as to have a wider scope in coming future

Tip: While constructing a building we should take care of the connections and joints in case of slopes or the shallow parts should be maintained well as in the monsoons the leakage occurs which is the major problem so if the joints and connections are well taken care this can be eradicated

Interarch Certified Builder Training

Interarch conducted Fire Safety training in for its employees at Pantnagar plant in the month of July’13

Building Maintenance Tip

In areas with high level of rainfall before monsoon make sure all gutters & downpipes are free from blockages from debris and leaves.

If a water leak / seepage is noticed inside the building immediate action must be taken to address the cause.

Building Made Possible in Steel: Forth Rail Bridge, Scotland

The bridge was the first major structure in Britain to be constructed of steel
Steel Tonnage - 64,800 Tons
Design of the Bridge is Cantilever Bridge
Total length of the bridge is 2,528.7 m (8,296 ft.)
Bridge’s longest span is 2 of 521.3 M (1710 ft.)
Clearance below the bridge is 46 M (151 ft.)
Approximately 4,600 workers were employed in its construction
It is a double track bridge and is elevated at 46 M (151 ft.) above the water level at high tide
The three great four-tower cantilever structures are 100.6 M (330 ft.) tall, each tower resting on a separate granite pier
These were constructed using 21 M (70 ft.) diameter caissons, those for the north cantilever and two on Inchgarvie acting as coffer dams while the remaining two on Inchgarvie and those for the south cantilever, where the river bed was 28 M (91 ft.) below high-water level used compressed air to keep water out of the working chamber at the base
The bridge has a speed limit of 50 miles per hour (80 km/h) for passenger trains and 20 miles per hour (32 km/h) for freight trains
The weight limit for any train on the bridge is 1,422 Tons (1,400 long tons; 1,567 short tons)
